Long before the Hummer H1 became a civilian status symbol, the military-spec M998 was hauling troops and gear over terrain that would swallow an ordinary truck whole. A 1987 example of that original Humvee, built by AM General, is crossing the block at GAA Classic Cars’ upcoming July auction, and it has been reworked into a serious overlanding rig without losing its no-nonsense roots.
Garage-worthy EDC gear, on sale this week.
Listed with lot number FR0234 and set to run with no reserve on Friday of GAA’s July auction, this Hummer wears an olive drab-tinted bed liner finish over its green body and rides on a suspension lift with inboard disc brakes. Power comes from the M998’s original-style 6.2-liter diesel V8, paired to an automatic transmission with a dual-range transfer case, so it retains the low-range crawling ability that made the platform famous in the first place.

Where this build separates itself from a stock surplus Humvee is in the details added for daily usability. A four-man cab kit with custom metal doors closes up the interior, upgraded bucket seats and three-point seatbelts replace the utilitarian military originals, and a 24-volt air conditioning system has been upgraded to keep the cabin livable. Outside, 17-inch Black Rhino alloy wheels wrapped in 40-inch Nitto tires fill the fenders, a Hummercore front guard adds off-road protection, a rear swing-away carrier holds the spare, and LED lighting brings the electrical system into the modern era.
Military Humvees have become an increasingly popular canvas for overlanding and off-road builds, prized for the go-anywhere chassis and portal-geared four-wheel-drive system that the M998 pioneered for the U.S. Army back in the 1980s. With no reserve attached, this one is a chance to pick up a genuinely capable, road-ready example without the guesswork that usually comes with buying surplus military iron.
