Motorsports fans had plenty to watch this weekend, as major series across several continents delivered breakthrough wins, championship-shaking results, and a few weather-related surprises.
Formula 1: Antonelli Rules Spa
Kimi Antonelli continued his rookie surge at the Belgian Grand Prix, leading home a Mercedes victory around the sweeping Spa-Francorchamps circuit and stretching his championship advantage. Charles Leclerc brought his Ferrari home in second, with Max Verstappen completing the podium in third for Red Bull. It was a rough afternoon on the other side of the Mercedes garage, as George Russell retired before completing a lap, while Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll also failed to see the checkered flag.
NASCAR Cup Series: Logano Ends the Drought at North Wilkesboro
Joey Logano delivered one of the biggest storylines of the NASCAR season, leading 323 of 450 laps to win the Window World 450 at North Wilkesboro Speedway, the first Cup Series points race held at the historic short track in three decades. The win snapped a lengthy winless stretch for the three-time champion and lifted him back toward playoff contention. Denny Hamlin chased Logano hard in the closing laps but settled for second, with Chase Briscoe rounding out the podium. Ty Gibbs and Shane van Gisbergen completed the top five.
NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series: Chandler Smith Cruises at North Wilkesboro
Chandler Smith made it look easy in Saturday’s Truck Series companion race at North Wilkesboro, cruising to an eight-second win over Layne Riggs for his ninth career series victory. Shane van Gisbergen backed up his strong Cup weekend with a top-five run in the trucks as well.
NHRA: Kalitta, Vandergriff, and Stanfield Sweep Sonoma
Sonoma Raceway played host to a sold-out Denso NHRA Sonoma Nationals, and reigning Top Fuel champion Doug Kalitta made the wine country track feel like home yet again, holding off local favorite Jasmine Salinas in the final round for his seventh career win at the venue. In Funny Car, John Force Racing’s Jordan Vandergriff picked up the second win of his young career, edging Daniel Wilkerson in the final round. Greg Stanfield held off six-time champion Erica Enders in an all-Elite Motorsports Pro Stock final to complete the sweep.
WRC: Pajari Announces Himself in Estonia
Toyota’s Sami Pajari delivered the breakout performance of the World Rally Championship season, leading from start to finish at Rally Estonia and banking nine consecutive stage wins along the way to his first career victory. Teammate Oliver Solberg pushed him late but had to settle for second, while Hyundai’s Adrien Fourmaux held off teammate Thierry Neuville for third. The result moved Pajari up to third in the championship standings.
IndyCar: Rain Has the Last Word in Nashville
IndyCar’s trip to Nashville Superspeedway ran into trouble when rain pushed the Music City Grand Prix off its Sunday slot and into a shortened Monday makeup race, putting the headline event just outside this weekend’s window. Sunday wasn’t a total washout, though, as the developmental INDY NXT series completed its own Music City Grand Prix, with Matteo Nannini leading a Cape Motorsports 1-2 finish for his second win of the season.
It was a busy, headline-filled weekend across the motorsports world, and with several series only days from their next events, this summer stretch shows no signs of slowing down.
