JCB builds backhoes, wheel loaders, and the yellow diggers you’ve probably been stuck behind on a single-lane road at some point in your life. It also just built a 32-foot hydrogen streamliner that hit 368.347 mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats, and the engines doing the work are modified versions of the same hydrogen combustion units JCB already sells for construction sites.
On August 6, the JCB Hydromax ran 367.141 mph on its first pass across the salt and 369.554 mph on its second, giving an average of 368.347 mph once Southern California Timing Association officials combined the two runs. That average is now the SCTA record in the AA/BGS class, Blown Gas Streamliner, engines over 500 cubic inches, set during Bonneville Speed Week, the annual event where record chasers from around the world gather on the flats. It replaces a mark of 348.342 mph set by the Spectre Streamliner back in 2010, a record that had stood for 16 years before JCB showed up.
Why Hydrogen Combustion, Not a Fuel Cell or a Battery
The number that deserves more attention than the headline speed is what it beat by category. Hydromax’s average now sits ahead of the existing land speed record for a hydrogen fuel-cell car and the electric vehicle land speed record, and it very nearly doubles the previous record for a hydrogen internal combustion vehicle. That matters because hydrogen combustion is the least-hyped of the zero-tailpipe-emission paths manufacturers keep chasing. Fuel cells get the headlines and batteries get the subsidies, while hydrogen ICE mostly gets ignored outside a handful of manufacturers betting that combustion architecture is easier to certify, service, and scale than an electrochemical stack.
Two Diggers’ Worth of Horsepower, Sent Through All Four Wheels
Under the bodywork, Hydromax runs two production-based JCB hydrogen combustion engines, each tuned to roughly 800 hp for a combined 1,600 hp, driving all four wheels through a twin-transmission and clutch system built by Xtrac. Prodrive built the car itself, and Ricardo handled the engine calibration, a supplier list that reads like a checklist of British motorsport engineering firms rather than a construction equipment press release. Four-wheel drive matters more than it sounds like it should at this speed: putting that much power through two wheels on salt, rather than pavement, is a good way to turn a record run into a very expensive skid mark.
The Only Person Alive Who’s Broken the Sound Barrier on Land
Before Utah, the team ran 44 test passes at RAF Wittering in Cambridgeshire, building speed incrementally rather than betting the whole program on a single run at Bonneville. Behind the wheel was retired RAF Wing Commander Andy Green OBE, who still holds the outright world land speed record at 763.035 mph, set in 1997 driving Thrust SSC, making him the only human to break the sound barrier on land. Green also drove the JCB Dieselmax to its 350.092 mph diesel land speed record twenty years ago, so JCB didn’t need to run an audition. They called the one driver who already knew what happens when a straight line and a jet-adjacent amount of horsepower cross paths on salt. He described the run as “an absolute joy,” a fairly restrained way to describe hitting 369 mph in a car with no doors.
A Class Record, Not Yet the Record JCB Actually Wants
This run is a class win recognized by the SCTA, the organization that runs Speed Week and certifies records within its own rulebook. It is not the outright record JCB is actually chasing. The team plans to increase engine output for a run at an FIA-recognized world record next week, with the FIA being the international governing body that certifies land speed marks beyond a single sanctioning body’s event. That distinction matters if JCB wants Hydromax’s number to mean something beyond Bonneville’s own record books, and it explains why a team that just set a record is already talking about going faster instead of celebrating.
JCB’s Unusually Deep Speed Record Portfolio
JCB has been doing this for two decades. Dieselmax set the world diesel land speed record in 2006, and that mark has never been broken. The company also holds the record for the world’s fastest tractor, the JCB Fastrac at 135.191 mph, and the world’s fastest backhoe loader, the JCB GT at 72.58 mph. None of that sells a single excavator directly, but it tells customers who actually buy JCB equipment something specific: the engines survive abuse well beyond anything a job site will ever demand of them.
Why a Digger Company Cares About Any of This
The real point of a project like this has little to do with bragging rights. Off-highway equipment manufacturers face the same emissions pressure as passenger car makers, without the luxury of easy electrification: a wheel loader or excavator running a multi-hour duty cycle on a job site doesn’t tolerate battery downtime the way a commuter car does. Hydrogen combustion keeps the familiar architecture of a diesel engine, pistons, valves, a bottom end a technician already knows how to rebuild, while swapping the fuel and adjusting the internals for hydrogen’s different combustion characteristics. Running that architecture at 1,600 hp and 368 mph for a week straight is a stress test no dyno replicates, and it’s the kind of proof a company anchored in Staffordshire needs if it wants regulators and customers to eventually trust hydrogen combustion the way they trust diesel now.
Whether that argument survives contact with an FIA-certified run remains to be seen. What’s already confirmed is that a company known for backhoes just posted a faster average speed than every hydrogen fuel-cell and electric land speed record on the books, using engines built from the same parts bin as the machines pouring concrete outside your office.
