Chassis 10R crossed the block at RM Sotheby’s Monterey sale on August 15 as Lot 328 and sold for $34,655,000. The house had estimated it in excess of $35 million back in July, so technically the car missed. Nobody in that room cared, because the previous public benchmark for a McLaren F1 was $25,317,500 — set nine months earlier when RM sold chassis 014 in Abu Dhabi. The model record just moved north by roughly $9.3 million in under a year.
That’s the headline number. The interesting stuff is underneath it.
What “1996 specification” actually bought you
The 1995 F1 GTR that stunned Le Mans was, mechanically, a fairly gentle reinterpretation of the road car — new bodywork, a big rear wing, carbon-ceramic discs, and the standard gearbox carried straight over. It won because it was reliable in a monsoon while the prototypes broke.
By 1996, the Porsche 911 GT1 had arrived and the polite approach was finished. McLaren extended the bodywork at both ends, fitted a considerably more aggressive front splitter for downforce, and — the part enthusiasts tend to skip — put the gearbox internals inside a magnesium housing with heavy-duty components. Net result: 38 kilograms out of the car. That’s about 84 pounds, which sounds trivial until you remember this is a chassis that was already obsessive about mass, and that removing weight from a transaxle also lowers polar moment and rotational inertia. You feel that everywhere.

RM’s catalogue makes a claim worth pausing on: the 1996 car was the fastest F1 GTR ever built, quicker than the 1997 Long Tail that followed. That runs against the assumption that later always means better, and it’s why the nine-car 1996 batch commands the money. Long Tails got more aero and a sequential box, but they also got heavier and were built to a rulebook that had moved on.
The road conversion is the reason it can be owned
10R never raced a Le Mans; it ran a 12-hour test session and then Pre-Qualifying in April 1996 with David Brabham driving for Kokusai Kaihatsu Racing, finishing eighth in class and 20th overall in that session. Sister car 11R took the race entry.
What made 10R usable was the factory converting it for road duty — one of an estimated sixteen GTRs to receive that treatment — followed by further work from Paul Lanzante, the man who ran the winning 1995 Le Mans effort. Anyone who’s tried to make a genuine GT1 car street-legal knows the scope: ride height and spring rates have to come back from race numbers or the car simply won’t clear a driveway, the fuel cell and fire system need rethinking, cooling has to survive stop-and-go rather than 180-mph airflow, and the interior gets enough trim and glazing to pass as a car rather than a projectile. The base architecture helps — McLaren’s own description of the F1 road car covers a carbon monocoque, a naturally aspirated 6.1-litre BMW V12 making over 620 bhp, and an engine bay lined in gold because it’s the best heat reflector available. The GTR started from a street car and went racing, so the return trip is shorter than it would be for a purpose-built prototype.
It’s been crashed. Twice. Read that again.
This is the part that should reset how you think about damage history at the top of the market.
RM’s own catalogue lays it out: after a 2009 magazine test, another journalist lost control and put the car into a wheat field, prompting a no-expense-spared restoration by Dean Lanzante. Then in 2017, at the 75th Goodwood Members’ Meeting, Nick Mason himself went off during a GT1 demonstration and hit a tire wall. Second restoration, same shop.
Two documented offs, and the car still set the marque record. The market’s logic is consistent if you follow it: a carbon monocoque is a repairable structure when the work is done by people who understand composite bonding and the original tub geometry, and a restoration by the son of the man who ran the Le Mans-winning team is not “accident damage,” it’s provenance. Compare that with how the collector market treats a repainted panel on a low-mileage road F1, where originality of finish is the entire proposition. Racing cars are graded on history; road cars are graded on preservation. Same manufacturer, opposite rulebooks.
The maintenance file was worth millions
Buried in the description is the detail I’d underline if I were bidding. Mason kept an open-checkbook arrangement with Lanzante, sending the car back to the workshop after every significant drive, and a recent inspection was on file.
That is not a flex. That is the asset. An F1 GTR requires a specialist ecosystem that essentially consists of Lanzante and McLaren Special Operations. Parts are not on a shelf. Engine work on an S70-family V12 goes to a very short list of people. A car with 25 years of continuous documented service from the correct shop is a fundamentally different financial object than an identical car that sat in a climate-controlled room since 2003 and needs everything gone through before it’s safe to start. Buyers at this level price the unknown, and 10R had almost no unknown.
The practical takeaway scales all the way down to your project car: receipts from the right specialist, accumulated consistently, are the cheapest value you will ever add.
The addendum nobody’s talking about
RM attached a note to the lot: because of California emissions, the car “must be sold to a dealer or out-of-state resident.”
Here’s why. A 1996 UK race car converted for road use was never manufactured to U.S. federal safety standards or California emissions standards, which makes it a direct import in California’s eyes. The DMV’s registration manual is blunt about the path: a 1968-or-newer car that doesn’t comply with U.S. emissions requirements gets referred to CARB, and compliance generally means testing at a CARB-licensed laboratory. Federal age exemptions don’t carry over — NHTSA’s 25-year rule and the EPA’s age provision get you into the country, not onto California plates.

So a Californian buying the most valuable British car ever auctioned, at an auction held in California, cannot simply register it in California. The car will need a home in another state, or a dealer intermediary. It’s a genuinely useful reminder for anyone importing anything interesting: clearing customs and clearing your state DMV are two entirely separate fights, and the second one is usually harder.
What it signals
McLaren F1 values have been climbing for a decade, but the shape of this result matters more than the size. A road car with a rebuild history and a Brunei provenance set the record last December. Eight months later a twice-crashed race prototype with a factory paint job beat it by nine figures’ worth of momentum — sorry, eight figures, but you take my point.
The money is chasing the story, not the odometer. Nick Mason, a factory livery nobody else got, a car McLaren kept for itself, and the last era in which a Le Mans overall winner could legitimately be driven home afterward. That combination doesn’t get manufactured again. Whoever bought it is now the custodian of something the market has decided is closer to a Ferrari 250 GTO than to a supercar — and if the comparison holds, $34.6 million will eventually look like the discount entry.
