Formula 1’s rumor mill is churning again, this time around one of the sport’s most tantalizing “what ifs”: could Max Verstappen end up at McLaren, with Oscar Piastri heading the other way to Red Bull?
According to British newspaper The Daily Mail, Verstappen has reportedly held initial, confidential talks with McLaren. The scenario floated in that report would see the four-time champion pair up with Lando Norris to form a McLaren “dream team,” while Piastri — Norris’s current teammate — moves to Red Bull as part of the swap. The Mail suggests this could happen as soon as next year, or potentially in 2028. An unnamed source reportedly told the paper it is “an idea McLaren is keen to pursue.”
It’s worth stressing up front: McLaren has categorically denied any such swap is in the works. Responding to F1 outlet GPblog, the team flatly rejected the idea that talks are taking place, reiterating that it remains very happy with its current Piastri–Norris lineup.
So what’s actually grounded in fact here? A few things are less speculative than the headline suggests. Verstappen’s contract reportedly includes a performance clause that could let him leave Red Bull if he isn’t among the top two drivers during the summer break — a detail that makes him theoretically easier for rival teams to sign, assuming they’re willing to pay a substantial salary. McLaren, the reporting suggests, wouldn’t view the money as an obstacle.
GPblog has also reported for some time that McLaren is a genuine option for Verstappen should he leave Red Bull — even, by that site’s account, his preferred destination. The logic is partly about elimination: a Ferrari move looks difficult with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc already under contract, and GPblog reported Thursday that George Russell is staying put at Mercedes, closing that door too. That leaves McLaren as one of the few realistic landing spots — though McLaren boss Zak Brown has generally waved off the Verstappen talk.
The Piastri side of the equation is even murkier and firmly in the realm of paddock whispers. There’s been longstanding speculation that the Australian is keeping his options open and would like to be an undisputed number one somewhere. McLaren, for its part, says that’s simply not true and that its relationship with Piastri is excellent.
The bottom line: this is unconfirmed, single-newspaper reporting that the team involved has explicitly denied. The contract clause and McLaren’s general appeal as a destination are more solidly established; the actual “secret talks” and the Verstappen-for-Piastri swap remain unverified rumor. Treat it as classic mid-season intrigue until — and unless — something more concrete emerges.
