Levy Your Personal Army: Leopard 1 A5 Battle Tank For Sale

Estimated read time 2 min read

For some, a sleek new sports car sitting in the driveway is the ultimate in bragging rights. But if you like to march to the beat of a different drummer, or a huge nerd when it comes to military history, this 1976 Leopard 1 A5 Battle Tank might be the perfect right to park in your driveway.

Learn about the most famous tank rampages.

Despite what some poor, misled souls think, this is America and you can buy your own private battle tank. Just keep in mind your HOA might not be a huge fan, so either live somewhere without one of those abominations or get a property with an extra large RV garage, because with this bad boy you’re going to need it.

But the sacrifices you’ll make to own this Leopard are well with the price of admissions into an elite club. Sure, this tank doesn’t have all the plush comforts of a modern Mercedes-Benz, but this one that’s crossing the auction block at Barrett-Jackson’s Palm Beach 2024 event is said to be completely refurbished and operational.

Driven by an MTU MB 838 Ca-M500 37.4-liter 10-cylinder turbodiesel engine, as the driver you have about 820-horsepower at your command. Built to be nimble, with minimal armor, this tank would be an absolute blast to play with in the great outdoors.

We doubt any of the weaponry works, but operational likely means it drives, can do those awesome tank turns, the turret swivels, and all that other fun stuff. It’s enough you can parade down your neighborhood street to lead the Fourth of July pride this year.

Many don’t know that the Leopard 1 was in fact designed by Porsche, so while it doesn’t wear the family name or the famous crest, we think it counts as one. And it’s the Porsche your neighbor doesn’t own.

If you want a chance to make this Leopard 1 A5 your very own battle tank, you’ll need to register to bid for the Barrett-Jackson 2024 auction taking place April 18-20.
