A YouTuber who thought he was buying a bargain Bugatti supercar online turned a disastrous $30,000 purchase into what he now calls the “coolest Bugatti ever.”
Content creator Carter Sharer said he ordered what was listed as a “neatly used” Bugatti from Alibaba earlier this year. What arrived was no exotic supercar but a hollow shell made of foam, complete with immovable wheels and no engine.
Instead of chalking it up as a loss, Sharer decided to make the fake car functional. His team installed a two-stroke engine from a remote-controlled monster truck, mounted a wooden dolly with real wheels beneath the foam shell, and set about bringing the odd project to life.
“The car was never going to get a W16 like the real thing, but it was so light we didn’t need one,” Sharer said in his video documenting the effort.
To start the engine, the team drilled a hole in the body to add a pull-start system. After some tinkering, the miniature motor roared to life, moving the fake Bugatti under its own power.

Though the car remains undrivable in any practical sense—it’s still just a foam body sitting on a modified dolly—Sharer said he was thrilled that what appeared to be a costly mistake became a quirky experiment for his channel.
The project serves as both a humorous cautionary tale and a showcase of creativity. “Don’t buy a Bugatti off Alibaba for $30,000,” Sharer joked. “But if you do, maybe you can turn it into something fun.”
