Somewhere at a truck stop this week, a driver locked the cab of a Volvo VNL, walked inside for a coffee, and came back to a truck running different software than the one they left. No laptop hookup, no idling in a dealer bay, no technician standing by with a scan tool. Volvo Trucks North America says that scenario is now the norm across the U.S. and Canada, wrapping up a rollout the company first previewed back in June.
The feature is called “lock and leave,” and it does exactly what it sounds like. A driver gets notified that an update is ready, starts the install, locks the truck, and walks away, whether that’s a thirty-minute break or an overnight stop. Nobody has to babysit the process, and the truck doesn’t need a dealership appointment to get it done. Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America, said drivers can now “lock and leave their truck while the update runs” and come back to one that’s ready for the road.
Why This Took a Rewired Truck, Not Just a New App
This isn’t Volvo bolting a phone-style update button onto an old truck. North American semis have run on 12-volt electrical systems for generations, plenty of power to crank a diesel and run headlights, but not much headroom for the always-on computing and sensor load a real over-the-air pipeline demands. Volvo’s fix was to bring a 24-volt electrical architecture, long standard on its European trucks, to the all-new VNL and VNR built for North America. More voltage means the wiring harness, which can run the length of a hood-to-cab tractor, carries the same power with less voltage drop, and it gives the truck’s onboard computers enough electrical margin to receive, verify, and install a full software package without the engine running. Volvo calls the VNL and VNR the most connected trucks it has built, and the electrical platform is the reason that claim holds up.
The Uptime Math Behind the Announcement
Volvo says it now has more than 220,000 connected trucks operating across North America, feeding a system capable of pushing out up to 20,000 software updates a day, double the 10,000-a-day ceiling the company cited back in June. More than 7,500 updates went out in August alone. Over the past six months, the share of connected Volvo trucks running the latest software climbed from about a quarter of the fleet to more than 80%, and trucks on current software see 24% fewer unplanned stops. Volvo credits the combination of over-the-air updates, remote diagnostics, and predictive service with helping customers avoid more than 100,000 days of unplanned downtime, which the company values at roughly $60 million in avoided costs. For a Class 8 tractor that only makes money while it’s loaded and moving, that math is the entire business case, not a marketing footnote.
What It Means for Owners, Technicians, and Dealers
Volvo has also said that fewer than 1% of customers opted out when automatic updates became the default setting, and the same connected data now lets technicians pre-diagnose a fault code before a truck ever reaches a service bay, contributing to a claimed 95% first-time fix rate. That’s a real change in what a dealership technician’s day looks like, less time chasing an intermittent code with a handheld scan tool, more time doing the repair the system already flagged. It also raises a quieter question worth watching: if a truck’s performance increasingly depends on software Volvo controls remotely, warranty and insurance claims tied to a post-update glitch could get harder to untangle than a straightforward mechanical failure, and owner-operators who like to diagnose or tune their own equipment have one less place to do it without the manufacturer in the loop.
A Locked, Unattended Truck Is Still a Target
There’s a security wrinkle worth sitting with, too. A truck that’s locked, mid-update, and unsupervised for the length of a driver’s break is still a truck sitting still and unattended in a lot, the same basic vulnerability that fueled a theft ring that rented out stolen semis to unsuspecting businesses for months before investigators caught on. Remote software access on commercial vehicles is also precisely the kind of attack surface regulators are starting to scrutinize, as Norway learned when it found a foreign SIM card acting as a kill switch hidden inside a Chinese-built transit bus. Volvo hasn’t published details on how its OTA pipeline is locked down against unauthorized access, and that’s a fair question for any fleet manager to ask before flipping the switch on their own trucks.
Volvo Isn’t the Only One Doing This
Volvo Group didn’t stop at its namesake brand. Mack Trucks, which shares a parent company with Volvo, rolled out its own Lock & Leave enhancement in July, letting Mack-badged trucks complete unattended updates the same way. Combined with the industry’s broader push toward autonomous trucking testing on public roads, it’s clear heavy-duty manufacturers are treating software, not just horsepower or torque curves, as the next real battleground for fleet customers.
The bigger picture is that the semi trucks doing the unglamorous work of hauling everything you own have quietly become some of the most frequently updated vehicles on the road, and they’re doing it with less driver involvement than plenty of passenger cars manage. Whether that convenience is worth what it costs in repair independence and cybersecurity exposure is a conversation the trucking industry is only starting to have.
