The United States Army has outlined plans to replace the long-serving Humvee with an unarmored light truck derived from a civilian model. Known as the Infantry Squad Vehicle, the platform is produced by GM Defense and built on the bones of the Chevy Colorado ZR2. The choice reflects a shift toward lighter, more mobile transport.
Basing a military vehicle on a proven civilian truck can streamline development, maintenance, and supply considerations. The trade-off, of course, is the lack of armor, which suits the vehicle to specific roles emphasizing speed and agility over protection. As the Army modernizes its fleet, the ISV represents one piece of a broader rethinking of how troops move on and around the battlefield.
