The headlights show up in your mirror a mile or so in. That’s fine; somebody else is out late. Then they’re closer. Then they’re right on your bumper, a pickup riding you through the curves on a road with nowhere to pull over. You speed up. It speeds up. You reach the end of the road, check the mirror one more time, and there’s nothing there.
Welcome to Clinton Road in West Milford, New Jersey. Our haunted-roads countdown named five stretches of American asphalt where drivers swear something is still out there, and this one earned a story of its own. Chicago has Resurrection Mary hitching rides. New Jersey got a tailgater.
The legend
Clinton Road runs about ten miles through dense woods, narrow and winding, and it has been called one of the most haunted roads in America for decades. The ghost truck is its signature scare. It always comes at night, because nobody drives Clinton Road for the scenery at noon, and it behaves like something out of Jeepers Creepers: much too close, pushing harder the harder you push.
Some versions add details. The headlights float too high, or seem attached to nothing at all, or there’s a whole convoy of them. Either way, something was behind you, and now the mirror is empty.

The truck isn’t the road’s only tenant, either. Clinton Road also has a ghost boy under the bridge who supposedly tosses back coins thrown into the water, a spectral Camaro, ghostly park rangers and a hellhound nicknamed “Wolfie.” The place is basically a haunted apartment complex.
Why here?
None of the reasons Clinton Road stuck require a ghost. The road itself is unnerving: it twists through deep woods and past Clinton Reservoir, with very few houses and long empty stretches. It has a real dark history, too. In 1983, the body of a victim of mob hitman Richard Kuklinski was found dumped along it. And it got famous early, thanks to Weird NJ magazine, before the Travel Channel and countless listicles took it national.
Lonely road, dense woods, the most densely populated state in America, and generations of teenagers daring each other at midnight: nobody needed a ghost to make this place famous.
So is it haunted?
No. There is no documented case of a verified phantom vehicle on Clinton Road. There’s a long, dark, twisting road that scares people, and scared people see things in mirrors. Tailgaters are real. The vanishing part is the legend.
The real hazards are the blind curves, the deer and the oncoming headlights attached to very real vehicles. Any of those is far more likely to get you than a ghost truck.
If you do drive it and something starts riding your bumper, don’t stop to look. It’s either a ghost or a New Jersey driver, and we’re not sure which is scarier.
