Rebuilding a Severely Damaged Ferrari 812 Superfast

In the world of exotic car restoration, some projects test the limits of feasibility and ambition. Such is the case with a severely damaged Ferrari 812 Superfast that recently rolled into the yard of a shop known for bringing wrecked luxury vehicles back to life. The vehicle’s arrival sparked a mix of curiosity and concern, particularly from Serg, the shop’s owner, who was immediately confronted with the car’s dire state.

Upon inspection, the extent of the damage was far worse than anticipated. The right side of the Ferrari bore the brunt of the impact, with significant damage extending from the front bumper, through the fenders and doors, to the rear bumper and diffuser. The once-pristine Rosso Corsa exterior now marred by crumples, cracks, and a serious oil leak, suggesting that the road to restoration would be anything but straightforward.

Complicating matters further was the car’s interior condition. Deployed airbags and a cracked windshield pointed to the force of the collision, while a non-functional key hinted at electrical troubles, later attributed to a dead battery. However, a glimmer of hope emerged when Serg managed to start the car’s 6.5-liter V12 engine, though the celebration was short-lived due to the oil leak, indicating potential engine damage.

The Ferrari’s luxurious appointments, including cognac leather bucket seats and extensive carbon fiber detailing, underscored the potential value of salvaging parts. Yet, the decision to rebuild rather than part out the vehicle speaks to the shop’s dedication and the allure of restoring such a prestigious model to its former glory.

Facing high costs and scarce availability of replacement parts, the team embarks on a meticulous restoration process. Starting with the suspension, they plan to dismantle the car, assess the damage internally, and proceed with repairs and replacements as necessary. The journey from wreckage to revival is fraught with challenges, but the prospect of returning the 812 Superfast to its capable of 0 to 62 mph in just 2.9 seconds is a powerful motivator.

This Ferrari 812 Superfast’s journey from near destruction to restoration highlights not only the technical and financial hurdles involved in such endeavors but also the passion and perseverance of those who undertake them. As the shop tackles this and other challenging projects, including a flood-damaged Ferrari, their work serves as a testament to the art and science of exotic car restoration.

Shawn Henry has spent years writing about cars, and it shows—not in a resume kind of way, but in how he talks about them. He's the type who'll notice the weird trim option nobody remembers and actually know why it mattered. At Backfire News, he covers pretty much the whole spectrum: off-road trucks and trail builds, performance cars, racing, and the collector market. He's comfortable getting into the technical weeds, but he never forgets that most people read about cars because cars are fun, not because they want a spec sheet. His beat runs from classic and collector vehicles to overlanding culture, modified performance builds, new automotive tech, and the industry news that actually affects what ends up in your driveway. Mostly, though, Shawn thinks the best car stories are about people—the builds they pour money into, the road trips, the communities that form around a shared obsession. That's the stuff he likes writing about, and it's what you'll find in his work here.
