Jared Anderson, a prominent heavyweight boxer, has been charged with a third-degree felony for fleeing a police officer following a high-speed chase that spanned over six miles and reached speeds exceeding 130 mph, as reported by the Huron Township, Michigan, public safety officials. The incident occurred around 1:36 p.m. ET on Thursday when Anderson allegedly attempted to evade police in an orange Dodge Challenger, leading to three attempted traffic stops before crashing into a median.
Released on a $10,000 bond early Saturday morning under the condition of restricted driving privileges, Anderson’s legal journey continues with a scheduled probable cause hearing on March 13 and a preliminary exam on March 20 in Romulus, Michigan. The 24-year-old boxer was arrested without further incident after the chase. If convicted, Anderson faces up to five years in prison, a $1,000 fine, and a one-year suspension of his driver’s license.
Following his release, Anderson issued an apology on social media, expressing regret to his family and supporters while committing to making better decisions in the future. Bruce Trampler, a longtime matchmaker for Top Rank, extended support to Anderson, emphasizing the importance of wise choices.
Anderson is currently preparing for an April 13 main event against Ryad Merhy in Corpus Christi, Texas, as part of “Top Rank Boxing on ESPN.” He is ranked as ESPN’s No. 8 heavyweight and is viewed as a leading contender for the American heavyweight title.
The Huron Township public safety director, Everette Robbins, suggested that Anderson’s actions might have been an attempt to provoke the police, noting a camera mounted to the back of his vehicle. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the chase or Anderson’s subsequent arrest.
This is not Anderson’s first brush with the law; he was arrested in November in Ohio on charges related to firearms and operating a vehicle under the influence, resulting in a fine and a suspended sentence upon pleading no contest to the firearms charge. Anderson last competed in August, achieving a TKO victory over Andriy Rudenko, and has maintained an undefeated record, securing two additional victories in 2023.
