A bombshell court filing has shaken McLaren Racing, with IndyCar star Alex Palou alleging that team CEO Zak Brown never wanted to sign Australian Formula 1 driver Oscar Piastri. The claim surfaced in Palou’s witness statement submitted to the UK High Court, part of his ongoing legal battle with McLaren over a failed IndyCar deal.

Palou, a four-time IndyCar champion, accused the team of misleading him with promises of a Formula 1 opportunity that disappeared once McLaren signed Piastri to replace Daniel Ricciardo ahead of the 2023 season. According to Palou, he only pulled out of his contract with McLaren’s IndyCar outfit after realizing that his path to Formula 1 had effectively been closed.
“The implied promotion to F1 was gone,” Palou stated in his testimony, saying that Brown “never wanted Piastri in the first place” and that the signing left him angry and blindsided.
McLaren is now suing Palou for breach of contract, seeking up to $30 million in damages. The team argues that his withdrawal cost them substantial sponsorship opportunities and financial losses. While the case does not directly involve Piastri’s controversial move from Alpine to McLaren, it has nonetheless dredged up some of the team’s most uncomfortable moments.

Piastri’s own switch to McLaren was one of Formula 1’s most dramatic sagas in 2022. Alpine had prematurely announced him as their driver for 2023, prompting Piastri to publicly reject the claim on social media, declaring he would not be racing for the team. The ensuing fallout embarrassed Alpine and paved the way for McLaren to sign the young Australian.
Now, with Palou’s accusations resurfacing in court, McLaren faces a fresh round of scrutiny. The revelations paint a picture of internal conflict and corporate maneuvering behind the scenes of one of Formula 1’s most closely watched driver deals.
As the case continues, both McLaren and Palou’s camp have remained tight-lipped — but the fallout is already rippling through the racing world.
