After deliberately steering clear of the segment for decades, BMW now reportedly wants to build a serious off-roader aimed squarely at Mercedes. The target is clear: the venerable G-Wagon, a boxy luxury SUV that has cultivated a devoted cult following. Entering this space would mark a notable departure for the brand.
Challenging an icon as entrenched as the G-Wagon is no small ambition, given the loyalty and prestige that model commands. BMW would need to balance genuine off-road capability with the upscale character buyers expect. If the project comes to fruition, it could inject fresh competition into a lucrative niche and give well-heeled adventurers another tempting option.
