Some scofflaw duck in Köniz, Switzerland keeps sticking it to authorities, almost doubling the speed limit on a stretch of road, the whole escapade caught on the municipal speed camera. It’s almost like the mallard is mocking the human authorities, flaunting his natural freedom and the fact he has no license plate and so can’t be fined.
This boat car for some reason isn’t amphibious.
For seven years now, the lone duck has left police baffled, going 52 kmh in a 30 khm zone (that’s 32 mph in an 18 mph zone), the speed camera capturing the fowl play. When officials saw the photo of the speed offender, they thought it might be a practical joke or some sort of doctored image.
However, it was concluded there was no way to hack into and manipulate the photos stored on the camera. In other words, the speeding duck was the real deal, not a joke placed there by a hacker or someone wearing a duck suit.
After all, the camera isn’t connected to the internet, so it can’t be hacked remotely. And the camera, as well as the radar sensor, are locked and sealed so if anyone opened it up physically, the manipulation would’ve been detected.
It’s almost like the mallard is mocking the humans’ use of radar and cameras to keep ourselves from speeding without consequences. There is, in fact, some truth to the old saying, “free as a bird” after all.
Obviously, authorities can’t be entirely sure it’s been the exact same bird that’s set off the speed camera in the past. But it’s a mallard that looks similar, going exactly 52 kmh in the 30 kmh zone, so that’s quite the coincidence if it isn’t.
Usually, police have a way to deal with repeat speeders, but in this case the duck is avoiding what would otherwise be a rather large bill at this point.
