What was supposed to be a smooth day of gavel drops and polished chrome at Mecum’s Dallas–Fort Worth auction turned into an unforgettable—and painful—spectacle. A vintage Willys pickup suddenly shot forward during the event, crashing into a group of classic cars and leaving three attendees hospitalized, according to local reports.

The unexpected surge happened as the 1958 Willys was being moved in the staging area. Witnesses said the truck lunged forward without warning, slamming into multiple high-value cars parked closely ahead of it. In a matter of seconds, the upbeat auction atmosphere shifted to shock as the collision unfolded in front of stunned bidders and staff.
Among the vehicles struck were a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette, a 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, and a 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1—each already attracting strong attention from collectors. Photos circulating online show the Willys with its front end crushed into the Corvette, which then pushed into the cars ahead of it like a row of dominos made of extremely expensive metal.
Staff members and spectators rushed in to help as paramedics were called to the scene. Three individuals were transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities confirmed.

Adding insult to injury, some of the cars involved had reportedly already been sold prior to the crash. Buyers who moments earlier were celebrating a dream purchase suddenly faced a nightmare scenario. The Willys, believed to be a modified build with big power under the hood, had yet to cross the auction block before the incident.
For collectors and auction regulars, the event served as a sobering reminder of how quickly things can go wrong around powerful machinery—even when the engines are supposed to be at idle. Instead of applause and excitement, the day ended with damaged sheet metal, shaken bidders, and a story no one at the event will soon forget.
