When we ran across a news report out of Kansas City about a woman being run over by her own truck, we had to read it twice. The story is so unbelievable, that her own unoccupied Ford F-150 ran the woman over, we just couldn’t wrap our heads around it at first.
Actor Hugh Jackman jumps into a stranger’s car to escape a crowd of fans.
Sadly, she didn’t survive the ordeal. While it would be easy for people to just laugh the story off or dismiss the woman as an idiot, we think there’s a good lesson in the tragedy.
According to KCTV 5, the unnamed woman of an unspecified age was at a Kansas City gas station on June 15 where she was pumping gas into her truck. For some reason, the F-150 started rolling backward out of its spot at the pump.
The woman probably panicking about her truck crashing and possibly getting damaged, maybe hitting someone else and injuring them, so she tried stopping it. But as she tried getting into the passenger-side front door, she instead fell and was run over by the front tire.
We imagine the truck has the gas filler on the passenger side, which is why she was over there. We know if you park close enough to the pump, you can’t get a door on a larger vehicle like a Ford F-150 open all the way, so that might have been a factor in the tragic accident.
A big question we and probably everyone else has is how did the truck start rolling? It’s unlikely the woman put it in reverse and left the engine running because it just would’ve started rolling after she took her foot off the brake pedal.
More likely is that she left it in neutral, thinking she put the transmission into park. If the surface where the truck was sitting was just a little sloped, it would’ve slowly at first rolled away, picking up speed as it went.
Another possibility is something malfunctioned with the truck for reasons unknown. We’re sure investigators are looking into that and other theories.
This sad case is a great reminder that you should double check your transmission before getting out of your vehicle. And if it does start rolling away, trying to jump inside to stop it is inherently risky.
