Cherished by many NASCAR fans, it appears the long-awaited sequel to Days of Thunder is finally happening. Reportedly Tom Cruise will return as the star and it shouldn’t be any other way. After all, not only did he make the first film, he is arguably the last true movie star.
John Force has returned to the racetrack.
This exciting news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which claims Cruise in in talks with Paramount to do a follow-up to the 1990 feature film. Some are shocked at this, but after the success of Top Gun: Maverick we honestly aren’t.
Sure, the box office numbers for Days of Thunder weren’t stellar back when it came out, but it was well-received by viewers and turned a decent profit back then. Plus, it’s garnered a cult following, something lacking in many Hollywood franchises these days.
Of course, the star power of Tom Cruise doesn’t hurt. The man does get butts in movie theater seats.
In the past, Paramount apparently pitched Cruise on doing a reboot of Days of Thunder as a streaming show, but the actor hated it. Now it appears he’s warm to the movie in the works, if this report is in fact accurate.
Considering the lack of good car-related movies lately (Ford v Ferrari was a rare treat) this could be a shining star for gearheads looking for some fun outside of the garage. The big question is will it appeal to general audiences? That depends in part on the script, but we know Cruise can bring the gravitas on the screen to sell action movies, plus draw in other talented actors for a fleshed-out cast.
We don’t think Nicole Kidman will be on board for the sequel, a fact we doubt will disappoint many. More concerning to us is what cool cars will be featured away from the racing sequences, since Top Gun: Maverick had some great automotive eye candy.
