We hear people all the time complain that these days nobody builds cool cars in their own garage, but this 1967 Camaro with a modern LT5 shows that’s simply not true. In fact, we know a lot of people who wrench in their garage, although things like modern HOA rules can make that tricky at times. But where there’s a will there’s a way, and incredible muscle cars like this one are born.
Learn why a guy was arrested after buying a car at an insurance auction.
The owner, Jake, hit up Autotopia LA to show off his work. But the YouTube channel often hosts established builders with sky-high budgets, not so much random nobodies. But Shawn said once he saw the guy’s Camaro, it was a “no-brainer” to have him and the Chevy on.
What Jake started off with was a really rough, okay we’ll say dilapidated, ’67 Camaro. His dad has built a number of hot rods, so he hit him up for some help with this car. The old man came through while his son was deployed overseas, doing a general restoration, although not exactly to factory spec.
While Jake has kept the matte black his dad chose, he has since ditched the original 350 in favor of a fire-breathing LT5. Along the way he did an LS swap like everyone and their grandma’s dog, before settling on the current powertrain, which is apparently a crate engine.
In case you don’t know, the engine is just like what comes in the C7 Corvette ZR1, so it’s a heavy hitter. With 755-horsepower and 715 lb.-ft. of torque, it’s like a sledgehammer in the ’67 Camaro.
To help keep all the power under control, Jake installed a SpeedTech front subframe and four-link rear suspension. Plus, he installed a full roll cage for torsional rigidity and the car has been tubbed for the right stance.
