Tesla has reportedly stopped delivering Cybertrucks to customers after an unintentional acceleration issue was uncovered by owners. And no, the problem isn’t just software and so can’t be fixed rapidly through an over the air update.
The Cybertruck is bullet-proof, but it isn’t Corolla-proof.
As demonstrated by one Cybertruck owner in a video uploaded onto Elon Musk’s X, the issue seems to be the pedal covers. He claimed the one on the accelerator came loose, wedging itself in a crease where the floorboard meets the firewall, keeping the pedal depressed all the way.
Fortunately, the man said he was able to stay calm and realized pressing the brake pedal would override the accelerator. That meant he could safely stop the Cybertruck, although once he let off the brake pedal it started accelerating immediately.
He finally figured out the problem and removed the cover himself.
This is the kind of problem we would expect on some kid’s ricer after he bought some really cheap “sport” pedal covers off Wish or eBay. The fact an automaker brought to market something so poorly made, especially when it comes to a heavily used item which is critical to the driver and passengers’ safety, well this is just sad.
We’re curious to see how Tesla will fix this incredibly concerning safety issue on Cybertrucks. Even for those of us who don’t own one this is frightening since we could be hit by an out-of-control industrial fridge on wheels.
This issue also should help cast even more doubt on the manufacturing standards of Tesla. The company has been lambasted for everything from inconsistent body panel gaps to what few physical controls they have going out prematurely.
Yet we wonder if the diehards who really want a Cybertruck will let this dampen their spirits one bit. Our guess is it won’t.
