Matt Lauer’s adult daughter, Romy, is in hot water after crashing her Jeep Wrangler into a fence and sign, then took off without reporting the incident to authorities. It would’ve been the perfect crime had she not left behind a key piece of evidence for police to find.

It happened in the Hamptons back on July 5 at 4 am, so we’re guessing it was a continuation of Independence Day revelry. Someone heard the crash and called police for help, fearing a person might be hurt.
When police arrived, they found the damaged fence and a road sign that was knocked down, but there was no vehicle to be found. That didn’t really matter since in the collision the front license plate on the Jeep was ripped off, reports Page Six.
That’s right, police just had to pick up the license plate to figure out who was responsible for crashing and taking off afterward. In other words, that’s about as close to a smoking gun as one gets with a crash investigation.
We know a lot of people who end up crashing like this just panic and take off, so they’re not looking at physical evidence which puts them at the scene. But a license plate is about the worst thing you could drop in your haste, other than maybe your wallet or cell phone.
Apparently, everything will be just fine for Romy. She has hired a high-powered attorney to handle the case, which honestly seems like overkill and makes us wonder if there’s a reason for that. Whatever it may be, it sounds like this case is going to go away soon enough.
Romy is the daughter of former Today host Matt Lauer and his ex-wife Annette Roque, a model. They split in 2017 after a divorce filing was rescinded back in 2006.
