A high school athlete was killed in a freak accident when a tree fell on her Ford Bronco as she was driving down the road. The incident highlights how precious and yet fleeting life can be when even the young and healthy can be taken so suddenly.

On June 20, 18-year-old Kennedy Columbus, a star softball player at Chazy Central Rural School in Chazy, New York was traveling down Lake Shore Road when a portion of a large tree next to the road suddenly fell on her SUV, crushing her.
The SUV flipped and hit a utility pole, damaging power lines in the area, reports NBC5.
Understandably, the community is shocked and in mourning over the sudden loss. Part of a letter written by Chazy Central Rural School reads, “This is an unimaginable loss, and our entire school community is grieving. We ask that you speak openly and compassionately with your children this evening. A loss like this can be overwhelming, and no one should face it alone. Our hearts are with Kennedy’s family and all who knew and loved her. We will share more information in the coming days.”
Columbus was a pitcher for the softball team and was college bound with dreams of perfecting her softball skills. She was due to graduate on Friday, June 27.
Local restaurant Whistle Stop Fusion Barbecue posted about Kennedy’s tragic passing, saying she and her family were frequent customers and were “like family.” The business went on to praise her, saying the high school senior “was a wildly intelligent, ambitious, athletic and beautiful young lady with a contagious smile and a heart of gold.”
It’s unclear why the tree fell, but we’re sure it’s already the focus of the investigation into Columbus’ untimely death. Sadly, the reality of driving is you always have to be ready for anything, but sometimes there’s just nothing you can do.
