Guy Fieri, Sammy Hagar Business Targeted In Mexican Border Heist

Celebrities Guy Fieri and Sammy Hagar lost a lot in a tequila truck heist by the Mexican border a few weeks ago. About a million dollars worth of product from their joint venture Santo Spirits was taken by a group Hagar claims is “some kind of organization.” One truck was recently recovered, but the other one appears to be long gone, the tequila onboard sold in the black market.

Those trucks were driving from the production facility in Mexico to a distribution center across the border in Texas when multiple individuals intercepted them, liberating the liquid refreshment from the rightful owners.

Understandably, when Hagar spoke with a Fox News reporter about the ordeal he was upset. He explained, “Santo is a small brand, that really put us back for Christmas, that was our load for the holidays that we were going to sell. We not only lost it, we have to pay to have it recreated.”

While some might not feel bad for the two celebrities, figuring they both have more than enough cash to cover the loss, they’re missing the point. If lawless individuals intercept products in transit like this whenever they please, the businesses which survive such hazardous conditions will be those which pass the losses on to consumers through higher prices.

In other words, you, the customer, will end up financing the thefts. That hardly seems fair but that’s how it works.

We’ve seen plenty of examples of organized crime taking down semi-trucks loaded with product in the past. Some of those efforts are more sophisticated than others. But with the two celebrities and authorities remaining tight-lipped about details of this heist, other than something about the drivers being provided with fake GPS units and cellphones, we couldn’t conclude how advanced this operation was.
