Dramatic bodycam footage out of Butler County, Ohio shows a cop spiking the tires on a stolen semi-truck as it leads authorities on a chase. Before the recorded footage, the suspect was reportedly driving through yards and even crashed through fences to avoid capture. Yet all it took as a set of Stop Sticks to bring him down.
Watch a dump truck help end a police chase.
The chase was crazy on multiple levels. According to Local 12, the suspect admitted to throwing objects out of the stolen semi’s windows, including oil and hammers, all with the aim of slowing police down as they gave chase.
But a deputy was already laying in wait with a trap, his Stop Sticks sitting on the side of the road as the suspect headed in that direction. You can see in the bodycam footage we’ve included the deputy hides behind trees by a house and waits to pull on the rope to move the Stop Sticks into position.
However, the suspect spots the trap and stops the truck in the road. That’s when the deputy draws his sidearm and tells the man to surrender. Realizing it’s capture of driving over the stop sticks, he guns it and tries swerving around them, but one tire rolls over the device.
Stop Sticks have hollow metal quills inside which detach once a tire comes into contact. Those quills lodge into the tire’s outer wall, opening up a clear pathway for air to escape quickly. Oftentimes, a punctured tire will only leak air slowly because the rubber compound will close up around the wound.
In this case, the Stop Stick did its job well, bringing the chase to a halt shortly after. The semi-truck ended up in yet another yard, the suspect finally surrendering. He reportedly has quite the long rap sheet in Indiana. Now he’s facing two felony charges.
