Sometimes barn find cars, which are by nature secrets hidden away from the public’s eyes, hide additional secrets. In the case of this 1968 Corvette 427, that secret had to do with a criminal past and so was understandably tucked inside a shed for over 40 years. But now it’s emerged and a video reveals it secretive past.
This Shelby GT500 turned into a cube is pure heartbreak.
The rumor in the Alabama town where the big block ‘Vette has been hidden was that the owner tucked it away it to keep from being arrested. Intrigued, a YouTuber started digging for answers. What he uncovered wasn’t just an amazing barn find but a story to match.
It was 1974 when the owner, then a high schooler, fell in love with the ’68 convertible with its 427, eventually negotiating its purchase. Well, as most young drivers are, this kid wouldn’t turn down a challenge to race. But that would almost prove to be his ruin.
After one too many brushes with the law chasing him, but thankfully not able to keep up, the kid decided it was time to hide away the ‘Vette and turn over a new leaf. So he pulled the sports car into the shed on his parents’ property and forgot all about it.
However, as time passed the wood structure started to deteriorate. Scared it would fall in and crush the dream car he had hidden away inside, the owner decided to allow the YouTuber to help him get it out of the structure. Perhaps the YouTuber had gained the man’s confidence by not divulging his secrets for some quick fame and fortune online?
As a result, the YouTuber was allowed to film the recovery and tell the man’s story. Of course, the neglected car was rough, the brakes and rear diff seized up, and there were other problems getting it to a new location.
Now, the owner is talking about restoring the ’68 Corvette. It’s obviously possible but the sports car is going to require a lot of work after just sitting for decades.
