A car guy in Australia took to social media to voice his outrage at the city council deciding to require a permit for simple things like performing oil changes at home. This is hardly the first time local governments have taken aim at the DIY car crowd, many of whom are hobbyists, but it’s always frustrating dealing with this one your home turf.
Ohio man buys a street at auction and the city wants it back.
In short, this guy feels like his local government is doing a shakedown by requiring permits to do oil changes, have unregistered cars, park trucks on private property, etc. He says they already charge astronomical property taxes on top of that. Somehow, we’re not surprised.
Some people argue that if you want to pursue the car hobby without restrictions, you need to live somewhere without an HOA. While that might seem to make sense to many, the fact is quite a few municipal and county governments impose restrictions which are worse than HOA restrictions.
Living in an older neighborhood without an HOA is no guarantee against the government imposing restrictions. For example, we know cities where there’s an ordinance against having an inoperable vehicle on your property, even just one kept in the garage.
While there are hobbyists who think there should be zero restrictions about how many cars you have and what you do with them on your property, others think some restrictions are good. This is where people should research where they’re planning to live and plan accordingly.
But when you’ve lived somewhere for a while and then the local government makes changes which you feel aren’t fair, that’s when a real problem arises. Which is exactly what this guy in Australia is dealing with.
The fact he’s beyond furious is understandable.
