Most people, even non-gearheads, remember seeing a Tesla Model S take down a Dodge Hellcat on the dragstrip. Even though that shocking video came out several years ago, for many it was a lifechanging event. However, a lot has changed since then, which makes these races between Teslas and American muscle cars interesting.
Watch Suzuki Hayabusas race Teslas, Lucids, and other fast EVs.
Sadly, your average non-car person would just assume Teslas are faster. Maybe it’s because of that video which spread like wildfire back in the day or just all the talk about how Elon’s EVs are superior in every way.
Laugh if you want – we personally have been told that very thing by wide-eyed individuals who genuinely believe the hype. Sure, Teslas can be rather quick, but just like any car they can also have their weaknesses.

In these drag races, you get to see how a Tesla Model 3, Model Y, and Model S Plaid handle the likes of Shelbys, Hellcats, and even a Camaro SS. They’re interesting matchups as you get to see multiple vehicles instead of just two, giving you a better comparison between the Teslas and muscle cars.
With the Teslas, the onboard technologies help manage launching off the line. Sure, the driver still needs to react quickly once the tree turns green, but that’s about it. With the muscle cars, there’s a lot more skill involved.
That’s both good and bad. For someone who really knows what they’re doing and has plenty of practice, they as the driver can make all the difference. But even the most seasoned drivers screw up sometimes.
For good measure, a Ford F-150, Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing, and C8 Corvettes are thrown in the mix in the race footage, even though those aren’t muscle cars.
Which do you think comes off victorious? Do you think modern American muscle cars have caught up with Teslas? Or is Elon’s technology unbeatable?
