Former Formula One driver Adrian Sutil has been arrested following coordinated police raids across Europe, with investigators describing the allegations as a “particularly serious case” involving suspected fraud and embezzlement, according to German newspaper Bild.

Authorities carried out searches Thursday morning at three locations — in Monaco, Switzerland and Sindelfingen, Germany — as part of an ongoing probe. Sutil, 42, was taken into custody during the operation. Prosecutors have not disclosed specific details of the suspected scheme but confirmed that investigators are pursuing allegations of “joint fraud in a particularly serious case and joint embezzlement.”
Sutil was transported to the Stuttgart District Court, where a judge issued an arrest warrant. He is reportedly being held at a prison in Baden-Württemberg. His attorney has not made any public comment on the charges or on Sutil’s status.
The former driver spent seven seasons in Formula One between 2007 and 2014, competing for Spyker, Force India and Sauber. He briefly remained in the paddock as a Williams reserve the following year before largely stepping away from professional motorsport. In recent years, he made occasional appearances in the Ferrari Challenge Europe series in 2022 and 2023.

Sutil is no stranger to high-profile legal trouble. In 2011, he was convicted of causing grievous bodily harm after an incident in a Shanghai nightclub left Lotus executive Eric Lux with injuries from a broken champagne glass. Sutil argued that the injury was accidental, claiming he intended only to spill a drink, but a German court disagreed. He received an 18-month suspended sentence and a €200,000 fine, a case that briefly cost him his Force India seat.
While Sutil later returned to Formula One, the latest allegations mark the most serious legal challenge he has faced. Authorities have not indicated when additional information may be released as the investigation continues and international agencies coordinate their efforts.
Sutil remains in custody as legal proceedings move forward.
