While this modified 1999 Toyota 4Runner certainly looks nice, seeing it listed for sale online at $35,000 is enough to make anyone choke. That’s especially true once you realize the rig has 370,000 miles on it. Sure, that supposedly is gold paint that honestly looks green, but this thing is priced like it has a gold-plated engine.
Should you just get a Porsche Cayenne for your off-roading adventures?
But this 4Runner has more than just a lift kit, bumpers, and big tires. The owner has done some big modifications which you should know about before passing judgement. Then you can decide if this off-roader is overpriced or maybe a good deal after all.

We’re not going to go through the entire mod list, which is detailed out in the vehicle listing, but we will touch on some highlights. The biggest one is a new engine which apparently has 140,000 miles on it. What engine was installed isn’t specified, so we’re assuming it’s a direct replacement and not something newer.
The listing does say there’s a big addition to that engine: a TRD supercharger with 6,000 miles on it. That means more power and that cool whine under WOT.
You might not have noticed the rock sliders in addition to the steel front and rear bumpers. We can’t tell from the photos, but we’re hoping a wench is hidden behind the front. The rooftop tent isn’t mentioned, so maybe it’s not included in the sale, but both the front and rear suspension have been fully built, an expensive and key set of modifications.

But is all that really worth $35,000? All it takes is one person who has the money to say yes and pull the trigger.
Even if you think this rig is priced competitively, just know you’d probably have to pay cash for the thing. After all, most lenders won’t float a loan on a vehicle that’s beyond a certain age, modifications or no.
If you have this kind of cash sitting around to spend on a vehicle, maybe this Toyota is the right off-roader for your lifestyle.
