For many, winning an expensive car like a Lamborghini Urus, especially one that’s gifted by a celebrity such as Shakira, is a dream come true. While people want to believe they’d hold onto and cherish the vehicle forever, reality is quite different. That’s why the guy who won Shakira’s custom ride almost immediately decided to sell it.
Police department is adding a fleet of Tesla Cybertrucks.
It’s no secret rich celebrities like Shakira have a disconnect with how the middle class lives. When she decided to give away her beloved Lamborghini, she probably thought the winner would be able to enjoy it just like her.

But Michael Mejia, the winner, recently explained in an interview on TV show El Gordo Y La Flaca that he’s unloading the exotic SUV because it’s just too expensive to keep. Anyone who’s ever owned a high-end European car understands at least to an extent what the guy’s talking about.
For example, Mejia says insurance for the Urus is over $2,000 a month. That’s way more than most people pay on a car loan, even two car loans, so that right there makes the Lambo more expensive than financing a cheaper ride.
He said he has to fill up the tank every two days, because the SUV isn’t light on gas, and that’s $70 each time. Wait until he finds out what simple maintenance or repairs cost!
Even though Shakira also gifted Mejia $90,000 towards maintenance, he claims that covered insurance for six months, transferring the title and registration, plus “legal matters.” Plus, taxes due at the end of the year for the Lambo are apparently $95,000.
To Mejia, the vehicle is worth much more liquidated than as a personal possession. He already had someone offer over $700,000 for it and we’d be willing to bet he could get even more for the Urus. Considering it’s been customized and was owned by Shakira, that alone probably adds to the value, at least for enough buyers to make unloading it quite profitable.
Shakira bought the Lamborghini Urus after going through a contentious divorce as a way to celebrate being single again. At the same time, she released her new single, Soltera, which is Spanish for “single.”
While the vehicle is blessing Mejia, it’s happening in a way we doubt Shakira ever expected.
