As most car companies are pushing loads of tech, disconnecting the driver from the visceral experience of driving, British automaker Morgan is going the opposite direction. The company recently revealed the latest generation of its flagship roadster, the Supersport, and it’s everything fans of the brand could’ve wanted.
Dodge is bringing the Viper back at last.
Morgan recruited former Top Gear and The Grand Tour host Richard Hammond, himself an unabashed Morgan owner, to perform the official unveiling of the new Supersport. We just wonder how long until the man crashes one.
After all, with a twin-turbo 3.0-liter BMW inline-six engine pumping out 335-bhp and 369 lb.-ft. of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, that’s plenty to get the 2,500 lb. roadster moving in a hurry.
There are some onboard technologies like Bluetooth and wireless charging. After all, Morgan isn’t living in the Dark Ages, despite what some people might believe.
Instead, the whole point of the new Supersport is to continue delivering a driving experience where you feel things instead of the car cushioning you from feedback. In other words, it’s more engaging and that’s what we love.
But this experience doesn’t come cheap. In the UK, the price of the new Supersport starts at £85,000 or about $112,800 USD and climbs from there depending on how you configure the car. That’s why car YouTube channel Number 27 says Supersports are “pricier than a Batmobile, makes even less sense.” And that’s why people love them.
Each Supersport is built by hand using a blend of old school and modern manufacturing techniques. This isn’t for someone who just wants a vehicle that gets them from point A to point B. Instead, the Supersport and other Morgans are designed for people who want to revel in the journey, even if you’re just going out for a pleasurable Sunday drive.
