Drones have been highly featured in the Ukraine War, with both sides bragging about victories using unmanned vehicles. We’ve highlighted the effective use of drones against Russian motorcycle units and how the Russians have tried building armored shells around them, similar to the weird turtle tanks which are also an attempt to guard against drone strikes.

But there’s a much more lethal and shocking type of drone Ukraine has apparently been using for some time, even though the revelation of the innovative practice was only recently revealed. The military has been using hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to craft highly explosive land drones, devastating Russian troops at strategic positions.
What’s even more interesting is as Ukraine faces equipment shortages as the war drags on, it’s now using civilian vehicles to build homemade land drones outfitted with powerful bombs. The land drones are powered by batteries and alternators from EVs, especially Teslas, says Euromaidan Press, with the fuel cells from hydrogen cars like the Toyota Mirai used as improvised explosives.
In one example, the portion of the Mirai’s fuel cell that was salvaged weighed about 200 kg. When the plastic explosives strapped to it were detonated remotely, the blast was akin to an airstrike. You can see the mushroom cloud resulting from the explosion.
It’s believed the building hit by the drone strike was storing ammunition, making the explosion even larger. Either way, it’s pretty incredible to realize Ukrainian troops repurposed a Tesla and Toyota Mirai to create such a lethal weapon.
While awful, wars can often become times of incredible innovations. Many vehicle technologies have emerged during big armed conflicts, from tanks to jeeps and nitrous oxide fogging of engines, to name a few. We have a feeling what Ukraine has done will have effects on the future we don’t even fully understand at the moment.
