You might have fantasized about driving a Porsche 930 Turbo, but for those of us who have we can tell you they’re far from perfect cars. That’s not to say they’re horrible, just there’s room for improvement, even though overall they’re a blast to take out on the open road. That’s what this build is all about: improving on what’s already great about the car.
See the amazing 1969 Camaro Tricycle.
This particular ride is a 1979 but still retains the wild flair which makes the 930 Turbo such an amazing Porsche 911 to experience. The shop which put together this incredible build addressed all the right performance issues, starting with a stiffer coilover kit, bigger sway bars to handle the extra power added.
As for the engine, it was donated by a 1981 930 Turbo but has been built. Inside is a crank from a 964, upgraded pistons and cylinders, plus electronic fuel injection. Sending power to the rear wheels is a Ruf 5-speed transmission donated by a CTR Yellowbird. Needless to say, this wasn’t a cheap car to build.
All that equals about 406-whp on the dyno, which is a massive amount considering it tips the scale at about 2,300 lbs.
When it comes to turbo lag, the shop was able to eliminate what most consider the most annoying and dangerous performance feature in the 930 Turbo. The turbo apparently starts hitting between 2,000 and 2,500 RPMs, much earlier than in stock form. That, combined with the extra gear in the transmission versus what came in the factory, means that snail power is coming on earlier and more often.
The aesthetics are a little different, too. That front bumper is from the IROC models, while the rear bumper is similar to what the Ruf Yellowbirds have. The ducktail comes from an RS model. And the interior features a nice blue, white, and black tartan that honors Porshce’s past but isn’t one of the ones originally offered by the automaker.
