While we’ve heard GMC has been having a little bit of a hard time selling the Hummer EVs, apparently thieves want them. A group tried stealing some from a train in the Detroit, Michigan area but failed miserably, wrecking one and getting the other stuck on the tracks.
A beloved brand returns to NASCAR.
The criminal geniuses had the plant to just drive the Hummer EVs right off a train and down the tracks just outside GM’s Factory Zero plant. We guess they’ve either played too many video games or watched too many car commercials.
One of the all-electric trucks didn’t even survive the fall from the train car onto the tracks. The front passenger-side wheel landed on the railroad tie, pushing it up into the fender while simultaneously slipping the rubber off the bead.
That’s right, for well above $100,000 these “trail machines” don’t even come with beadlock wheels. But they can cab walk, which didn’t help either truck.
The second one did survive the jump out of the train car but got stuck on the train tracks a short distance away. It’s not entirely clear how it became trapped, but it does look like the driver might have wedged the front passenger-side wheel onto the rail at an angle.
In short, this incident isn’t a great endorsement of the rugged, trail-ready capabilities of the GMC Hummer EV. While train tracks aren’t easy for cars to drive on, they shouldn’t present such an obstacle for a six-figure off-road machine, or so we would argue.
Then again, the Hummers of old were more about image than actual performance chops, so this is just par for the course. They’re a far cry from the Humvees the naïve constantly confuse them with.
