After giving us teaser trailers and breadcrumbs, Warner Bros. has finally released the first full trailer for the F1 movie starring Brad Pitt. We had a little bit of an idea about the film’s storyline, but the new trailer sheds more light on that and shows the realistic cinematography used to immerse viewers in the racing sequences.
A NASCAR drama filmed using practical effects is also rumored to be in the works.
That’s the part we’re most excited about – the racing scenes. Since they were all filmed using practical effects, not the cheesy CGI we see in movies way too often these days, we’re pumped to see all the action unfold.
The same approach was used in Top Gun: Maverick to great effect. It’s no coincidence F1 has the same director, Joseph Kosinski.
Like Top Gun: Maverick, F1 tells the story of a washed-up old man who’s been pushed out of the limelight, only to be given one more chance to prove himself. Sonny Hayes, played by Brad Pitt, is an older racecar driver who apparently was supposed to be big in Formula One back in the day but flamed out.
Still racing in other series, he’s approached with an opportunity to be the second driver on a fictional APX Mercedes team and mentor a young hotheaded driver, Joshua Pearce, played by Damson Idris.
Of course, the two clash, face adversity, and get zero respect from their competitors. All of this is hinted at in the trailer, which doesn’t completely spoil the plot, instead giving us a good taste of things to come.
We love a good underdog story and this looks like it could be just that.
Adding to the intrigue are comments made by Lewis Hamilton following the trailer’s release. The F1 champion has praised Brad Pitt’s driving in the film.
“Watching Brad drive around at speeds over 180 miles an hour was really impressive to see because it’s not something you can just learn overnight,” said Hamilton, according to ESPN.
Pitt was driving the car at F1 GPs between practice and qualifying sessions right in front of hundreds of thousands of fans. However, he had a helmet on, so they had no idea who was behind the wheel.
Some scenes shot at GPs involved Pitt removing his helmet, and that’s when people started talking about an upcoming movie. We expect that buzz will increase as the June 27 release date here in the US (June 25 internationally) approaches.
