A social media influencer in Phoenix, Arizona caused chaos when he put a $10,000 credit on the pumps, telling his followers they would get free fuel if they got there in time. The result was huge crowds flocking to the station, causing the busy intersection where it’s located to snarl, leading to traffic woes for many.
You could live the dream of driving a giant wiener.
When local station 12 News spoke with people at the gas station, they praised the influencer for “helping people” by doing stunts like this one. We wonder if the news team tried hunting down anyone who was just trying to get somewhere in the gridlocked intersection, burning up extra gas so others could get some free fuel.
This is hardly the first time we’ve seen a social media influencer cause chaos at a car-related business. It seems many of them thrive on drama, so the more they can whip up the better as it makes for good online content and gets people talking about them.
While you can find out who the influencer is in the 12 News report we’ve included, we’re not mentioning him by name. After all, that’s why he did this giveaway, obviously not thinking about how others who don’t follow him on social media would be affected.
After all, the name of the game is getting more followers and keeping your current ones engaged. The followers who were interviewed at the gas station seemed to be all smiles about the chaos since they got a free tank of fuel. But police had to show up and manage the overloaded traffic, pulling them away from other duties.
What do you think of this publicity stunt (or as they call it these days, clout chasing)? Is this a good thing for influencers to do with their large online followings or should be they held accountable for causing chaos like this?
