When winter storms hit, an icy road can become deadly for everyone, including semi-trucks. That was on full Display in the Kansas City area as videos of vehicles sliding helplessly were captured by other drivers. But one of the most shocking is one of a big rig jackknifing in traffic, putting all the cars around it in grave danger.
Florida is getting its first radioactive road.
Even though authorities in the Kansas City area encouraged drivers to avoid travel during a winter storm that involved blizzard conditions and icy roads, many didn’t heed the warnings. The result was crashes on surface streets and highways, plus state police in Missouri actually shutting down part of Interstate 29 when it became impassable, stranding motorists.
A couple traveling on a highway in Kansas City during the storm last weekend caught on camera the moment when a semi-truck jackknifed thanks to ice. According to USA Today, the woman was already recording another crash when the semi came onto the highway at high speed, immediately losing control.
You can see in the footage we’ve included, as the truck starts merging into traffic it just keeps sliding all the way to the left lane. The driver is able to regain control temporarily, then it slides right toward the shoulder as the woman gasps.
That’s when the big rig jackknifes as other drivers slow down to avoid the mess.
In another incident caught on camera in Kansas City, a car traveling down a highway off-ramp hits ice and keeps sliding toward the shoulder. Panicking the driver opens her door and bails out onto the road.
While the footage is funny at first, the reality is what she did is incredibly dangerous. She could have been run over by her own vehicle or someone else, especially in slipper conditions like that. Plus, if she left the car in drive, it could have rolled into traffic and caused a serious accident. Thankfully it hit some shrubs and came to a stop.
With more winter storms coming across a good portion of the country, we advise you hunker down, stay home, and keep off the slippery roads.
