In recent years it’s become more of a thing to dress up your car for Halloween, something Rivian now is playing into with a new software update. The all-electric truck manufacturer has released a new over-the-air update that transforms the appearance of customer’s R1t or R1S just in time for the Spooky Season.

The new software update allows owners to customize exterior and interior lighting, along with the digital dashboard of their vehicle to either a K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider or the DeLorean time machine from the Back to the Future themes.
All owners have to do is open the Rivian app on their phone and select either the K.I.T.T. or Time Machine mode. It’s an effortless way to transform how the vehicle appears for the Halloween season.
In the K.I.T.T. mode, a Rivian will feature the iconic red chase light on the front fascia, play the Knight Rider theme song on the sound system, and show the center console layout used in the robotic Pontiac Trans Am.
Selecting the Time Machine mode switches the digital gauges to the DMC-12’s Plutonium Chamber gauge setup, plus plays the Back to the Future theme song. There’s also an 88 mph button the driver can press to play a special light show.
If you want to go with something less commercial, there’s a Trunk or Treat option which triggers scary sound effects and allows drivers to choose a Halloween-themed lighting effect to create the perfect mood.
Dressing up one’s car for Halloween has in part been popularized with the surge of trunk or treats in lieu of door-to-door trick or treating. Since everyone gathers in a parking lot and people hand out candy from the back of their vehicle, decorating your ride to celebrate the season just seems like a natural fit.
While not everyone is a fan of the evolution of Halloween, it’s interesting to watch Rivian join in the trend while other automakers have failed to really seize upon it. Perhaps that will change in the near future?
