Sadly, death and serious injury are part of racing, something 28-year-old Carlos Oliviera of Paraguay surely knew well. The rising star in motorsports tempted that fate many times, however a crash in his Porsche 911 GT3 RS at the Ruben Dumot racetrack during an event on November 10 claimed the man’s life. Videos of the fatal crash have been circulating online.
Airplane crashes at a drag race event.
In those videos, which were taken from multiple angles, we see Oliviera came out of a turn a little too fast, running the Porsche off the track briefly. The car then strafed back onto the pavement at high speed, but got sideways.
While it was skidding out of control, it hit a concrete barrier on the driver’s side. The impact was so hard it concaved that side of the car as the crowd gasped. Everyone knew it was a bad crash.
Some are criticizing the track for having a bare concrete barrier without putting any soft barriers around it, especially on the gore point. In many other parts of the world such a thing would never be allowed for this very reason.
Had tires, sand barrels, even an aluminum rail been present, most if not all of the crash forces would have been absorbed by that instead of the unforgiving concrete.
The event wasn’t a race but instead was a track day. This just proves that every time you get behind the wheel of a vehicle and push it, even not in a super serious competition, you’re risking a serious accident. Having the proper safety equipment, plus being on a track that’s designed with safety measures, is critical to walking away from a crash.
Motorsports are dangerous and anyone who pretends otherwise is either a complete fool or is lying. We don’t like seeing accidents like this, especially when some simple measures could have changed the outcome from fatal to perhaps some broken bones.
