Losing all your earthly possessions in a fire would be hard for anyone, and that’s exactly what Australian racecar driver Declan Fraser faced recently. While the Supercar competitor was at Mount Panorama, his house in the Gold Coast was fully engulfed in flames, leaving the man homeless.
A fleeing motorcyclist catches fire in a wild police chase.
There are a number of things you probably would deeply miss if your house was gutted by a fire: family photos, old heirlooms, etc. For Fraser, he said the biggest blow was losing all his racing helmets he used throughout the years, says ABC News.
Like many other racers, Fraser has kept his helmets from way back in the beginning when he was driving go-karts. He explained that a helmet is a racecar driver’s identity, so losing those hurt the most.
Other racing memorabilia was also burned up in the fire, including trophies, ribbons, etc. While losing those irreplaceable items hurts, it’s the helmets which meant the most to the man. He’ll accumulate more since his career is young, but not having all those form the start to now is something that will probably always smart.
The Gold Coast home was a total loss. Fraser found out about the fire, which took seven fire crews to battle, before his race began. We wonder if it wouldn’t have been better to tell him afterward since that sort of thing can affect your focus.
Fraser was renting a room in the house, so while he lost items the family which owns the house truly lost everything. The racer seems to have the right perspective, recognizing that and saying he was primarily concerned nobody was injured or worse.
Apparently, that kept at the forefront of his mind during the race, with Fraser saying he pushed himself to honor the family. However, he finished 16 in the field, missing the podium finish the team was aiming to achieve.
