We’ve touched on the ill-fated McLaren Mustangs before, a program which ended before it really got started back in the early 80s. Few of the special pony cars were made, so each time one is available for purchase it creates a bit of a stir. But what’s headed to the auction block in January is not only one of the 10 prototypes but the only one supposedly produced with a black paint job.
Watch a quad-turbo Mustang take on a Nissan R35 Godzilla.
You’ve probably seen this Mustang’s siblings in their trademark Bittersweet Orange, so this black example sticks out. It has the same 2.3-liter turbo four-cylinder engine which was blueprinted, deburred, and reassembled by McLaren for a nice little power bump. That’s paired with a four-speed manual transmission for a fun time.
Since these cars were originally built for racing in IMSA, they have some track-focused treatments. Among them is an upgraded suspension, SCCA approved rollbar, fiberglass hood with air ducts, flared fenders, functional brake ducts, BBS mesh wheels, and a front air dam. While it’s obviously a Fox Body, it doesn’t look like the other Mustangs.
According to the lot listing, this McLaren Mustang spent some time abroad in Europe but was recently brought back to the US. Now it seems the current owner is ready to unburden the past and move on to other rides.
This is apparently the eighth of ten prototypes, as declared with the Serial no. 08 plaque on the dash and another found under the hood. With a mere 8,096 miles displayed on the odometer, combined with the fact this is supposed to be a one-of-one prototype Mustang, we expect this could go for big money when it crosses the auction block at the Mecum Kissimmee event in January.
