A 1991 Lotus Elan SE that’s famous for having been used in a major Hollywood movie back in the day just auctioned online for shockingly little. If you’re looking at the little yellow car and can’t for the life of you remember what film it was in, neither could we when we first saw it. Perhaps that factored into the low final bid.
Court rules movie cars aren’t subject to copyright laws.
The movie car was in Honey I Blew Up The Kids!, a flick that’s almost like a fever dream to us at this point. Even after learning that, we couldn’t remember the Lotus, but it was played with by the giant toddler as if it were a Hot Wheels.
Listed on eBay, the ’91 Elan SE has just over 100,000 miles on it. While that’s a little higher than you’ll find with a lot of movie cars, it does look like it’s in good condition. According to the person who listed the Lotus, the other ones used in filming were hacked up to create a backseat or to make them light enough for a special effects scene.
Included in the sale were a number of spare parts the owner collected, including a front clip, radiator, even an entire interior. All that’s nice to have considering there aren’t many Elans around these days.
Even with all that, the top bid only hit $14,010. You know that final ten bucks was someone just barely edging out a fellow bidder, but instead of doing it in increments of one hundred dollars that person did it in ten – unbelievable.
The winner will be able to display this thing at car shows and maybe people will remember it. We sure didn’t and almost forgot the movie existed.
