While there’s plenty of buzz around Porsche preparing the first-ever production hybrid 911, some might not realize that celebrity gearhead Michael Strahan already has one. It’s not exactly a production version, though, but instead is a custom-built 964 crafted by Tedson Motors.
Dealer refuses a $185,000 bid for a rare 1986 Porsche 911 Turbo S.
In many ways, that makes Strahan’s ride so much more special and definitely far more unique. Tedson Motors goes so far as to call the Daydream “a true supercar.”
You’ll notice the Daydream does look like a 964, and yet it doesn’t. That’s thanks to a two-year process where Tedson Motors scanned the entire body, created a 3D model, then did a nip here and a tuck there to not only give the iconic Porsche a more modern vibe but also to improve aerodynamics significantly.
As for the original flat 3.6-liter engine, it was rebuilt by hand, boosting displacement to 4.0 liters. Horsepower also increased to 390 and torque reaches a peak 315 lb.-ft. That alone would be enough to make for plenty of thrilling times on the road or track, but the electric motor in lieu of a factory flywheel injects another 150-hp and 150 lb.-ft. of torque into the equation.
The driver gets to decide how much assistance he wants from the electric motor. Using a knob on the steering wheel, he can select Standard Mode and only use the internal combustion engine. Going with Sport Mode dials up electric power to 50 percent, providing some extra low-end torque and a bit of a power boost.
Finally, there’s Sport Plus Mode, which pours all of the performance capability from the electric motor into the driveline, making the 964 rocket forward with ferocity. In fact, Tedson Motors says 0-62 acceleration takes a mere 2.8 seconds in this mode.
Even better, the company recommends customers go with a 964 Carrera 4 manual transmission for a more “authentic” experience behind the wheel. We love that way of thinking.
Purists aren’t going to like this modern interpretation of the Porsche 964. But keep in mind purists were livid when Porsche added water cooling to the 911 with the 996, declaring back then that the brand was ruined.
On the flip side, we’re sure Michael Strahan loves his Daydream and anyone else who can afford one will as well.
