Land Rover is getting back to its roots in a way by launching a new Defender Trophy that promises to push the boundaries. The British automaker is on the hunt for people to participate, but it’s obviously not going to take just any ol’ bloke.

In an official press release about the Defender Trophy, the company says successful competitors need to “embrace the impossible, with a passion for global conservation.” It also mentions they require an “unstoppable spirit of adventure.”
We really hope this doesn’t mean Land Rover goes with a bunch of insufferable Chads or girl bosses. Just keep in mind Jaguar, which is the other side of the coin the Jaguar Land Rover parent company, did embarrass itself with a beyond-cringey marketing campaign a few months ago.
Anyway, this new competition is supposed to be inspired by the old Trophy and Challenge events Land Rover used to put on back in the glory days. It’s good to see the Brits get back to their roots and play in the mud.
What we know so far about the format of the Defender Trophy is there will be three rounds of both training and competition. Competitors will be tested both physically and mentally.
Even though competitors will be scored individually, they will compete in pairs, which change with each stage of the competition. During each stage, the teams will have to complete a mix of Driving Challenges, Ingenuity Challenges, and Physical Challenges.
Regional finals in each country will take place in early 2026. Once competitors win in their own nation, they advance to the global final to be held in Africa in the fall of 2026.
Land Rover is taking applications for the Defender Trophy from over 50 different countries. If you’re in North America, you can sign up here.
