Former NASCAR driver Kurt Busch is in a wee bit of trouble with the law after getting pulled over and arrested for driving while intoxicated. One would hope a racecar driver, either current or former, would understand the dangers of DWI, so this news has been shocking to many of his fans.

The 46-year-old Busch was pulled over and cited not only for DWI but also speeding and reckless driving not too long before midnight on August 13. Originally, he was pulled over by a deputy in Iredell County, North Carolina for speeding, reports Iredell Free News, after the sheriff’s department started an anti-speeding initiative.
Allegedly, Busch was driving his Lexus at 63 mph in a 45 mph zone. After the deputy pulled the NASCAR champion over, he noted Busch “had red glassy eyes” as well as “a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath.” What’s more, as the deputy talked to Busch, he allegedly “admitted to drinking prior to driving.”
Busch’s blood alcohol concentration was reportedly 0.17 percent, well over the legal limit of .08 percent in North Carolina.
This isn’t Busch’s first time being accused of driving under the influence. Back in November 2005 he was pulled over on suspicion of DUI in Maricopa County, Arizona. Ultimately he did community service hours.
On August 14, Kurt Busch appeared before an Iredell County magistrate to learn his fate after the arrest. Ultimately, his driver’s license was revoked for 30 days. He’s scheduled to appear in court again on September 19.
A formal statement released by Busch on August 14 reads as follows:
“I’m very disappointed in myself and I apologize to my family, my racing family, and to my fans. I will work with the authorities to rectify the situation and work with the county to make it a safer place in the future.”
