We keep telling people when you’re driving on public roads, be ready for anything, but seeing a kangaroo on an Alabama interstate is enough to catch anyone off guard. That’s why last week when just such a marsupial turned up hopping down Interstate 85 in Lee County and Macon County, two cars crashed into each other as plenty of drivers whipped out their phones to record the escapade, probably thinking nobody would believe the story otherwise.
Drivers work together to save a chihuahua running down a busy highway.
To Australians, this probably sounds absolutely hilarious. After all, in the Outback kangaroos are so common, many cars have a ‘roo bar that’s designed to keep the front end of the vehicle free of damage should one of these creatures jump out in front of you.
In this case out of Alabama, the kangaroo wasn’t all that large and it thankfully wasn’t hit by anyone. But tracking down and capturing the little guy wasn’t all that easy. Law enforcement from several agencies converged on the area in an effort to contain the creature, which eventually left the interstate behind and headed into the nearby trees.
Thanks to Macon County Sheriff Andre Brunson, who livestreamed the kangaroo hunt, we know the animal was successfully tranquilized and turned over to the owner, who was helping to hunt it down.
“Wow, a kangaroo, fellas, in Tuskegee, Alabama, Macon County,” remarked Sheriff Brunson. “We see a little bit of everything here.”

How the thing got out hasn’t been explained. We don’t know if it’s a pet, part of some small zoo, or what the situation is. But we do know nobody headed to work was expecting to see the Australian critter on the interstate.
Just like with deer, kangaroos are notoriously unpredictable around cars, hence the ‘roo bars in Australia. This little one wisely didn’t try getting in front of any speeding vehicles, otherwise the situation wouldn’t have ended well for him and possibly multiple drivers.
