One of the biggest threats to established racetracks is Karens who buy a condo nearby, then complain constantly about the noise, crowds, etc. This is the sort of thing that’s resulted in some tracks closing down, but the Iowa legislature has put the smackdown on this sort of thing, with the state house and senate both passing a bill which would stop neighbors of racetracks from filing noise of nuisance complaints against them.
Porsche becomes the official car of a famous racetrack.
Iowa House Bill 645 went to Governor Kim Reynold’s desk for approval and she signed it into law on May 1. This means if a track or motorsports facility was established before a nearby property was purchased by the complainer or it was developed, it’s immune from anyone filing noise or nuisance complaints.
It might sound silly someone would buy a house near a racetrack, then later complain about the noise made by the cars and crowds, but it happens all over the place. Sadly, common sense isn’t so common, so a law has to be passed to keep these miserable, silly individuals from wantonly closing tracks.
This sort of thing has played out over and over. While some tracks have effectively fought back against these sorts of claims, others don’t have the financial backing to stave off attacks from neighbors, and so they’ve closed.
That’s right, one miserable person who moves near a racetrack and is shocked it’s noisy sometimes can ruin the fun for thousands of others. It’s not even close to fair, but anyone who’s spent time in court knows the system is far from just or perfect all the time.
Something like this law should be passed in every state, guarding the future of motorsports from the Karens of the world.
