Following a period of snow, ice, and strong winds across the state, residents in Hamburg noticed a BMW sitting exposed in a parking lot near Lake Erie. Water from the lake, combined with freezing temperatures, coated the vehicle in thick layers of ice, covering not only the exterior but also the interior. Ice formed over the seats while snow accumulated inside the cabin, giving the car the appearance of a frozen shell.
The vehicle was located in the parking lot of Hoak’s restaurant in Hamburg, where it remained in plain view as the winter conditions intensified. The scene quickly spread online, prompting people to visit the site in person. Those who arrived were surprised by the extent of the freezing damage, finding a luxury vehicle transformed into what some described as an automotive ice structure.
Authorities later confirmed that the BMW had been stolen from Buffalo before being left abandoned. With no protection from the elements, the vehicle was battered by wind and water from Lake Erie as temperatures dropped, leading to the dramatic ice buildup that captured public interest.
As news of the frozen BMW spread, the location became a destination for photos and brief stops, adding an unexpected moment of fascination during an otherwise difficult stretch of winter weather. The spectacle stood out even in a region accustomed to severe seasonal conditions, highlighting the intensity of the recent storms.
Police said the vehicle’s owner was in the process of arranging for it to be recovered and towed. Once removed, the BMW will require extensive cleanup after prolonged exposure to ice, snow, and freezing water.
While the car’s condition reflects the damage caused by winter storms and abandonment, it also offered residents a brief distraction. The frozen BMW became a shared point of curiosity, turning a stolen vehicle into a temporary landmark shaped entirely by weather and circumstance.
