We know a number of enthusiasts dream of one day owning a genuine Unimog, so may we present to you this 1965 Mercedes Unimog 404S that’s listed for sale. It looks like it’s in good shape, has some interesting mods for outdoor adventuring, and most importantly is at a decent price point.
Maybe you want a SWAT Team truck instead?
As detailed out in the listing, the initial round of modifications for this Unimog were performed by Expedition Outfitters based out of Oklahoma. Some of the bigger changes include putting a fiberglass roof hat on the cab and extending the length of the cab behind the original front seats, belt-driven/engine mounted air compressor, a custom snorkel system to allow the vehicle to ford a claimed 38 inches of water safely, full 12-volt electrical system conversion, and an M130 six-cylinder engine swap plus 12-speed automatic transmission.

Plus, the rear portion of the Unimog is a living quarters complete with fold-away beds, kitchen sink, LED lighting, TV with DVD player, fold-out tables, propane stove, and access to the full roof rack through a ladder plus roof hatch.
This is the kind of vehicle you can take out into the wilderness and live for a while. Or you could use it for road tripping across the country, venturing into more rugged areas as you please.
According to the seller, this Unimog has a clean title and is fully street legal, so you should be able to register it wherever you live. Still, we’d advise you to always do your own due diligence before buying something unique and imported.
There are some issues which need to be addressed, as detailed out in the listing. Still, this one-of-a-kind custom Unimog might be compelling enough to deal with those repairs.
The seller says the $36,000 asking price is firm, so lowballing will probably get you shot down immediately. Do you think the rig is worth that much? Or would you pass on this for something else?
