If you think the prices of classic American muscle cars have skyrocketed, wait until you see this 1993 GMC Typhoon that auctioned off recently for a cool $226,000. Considering the go-fast SUV which was a blue collar man’s vehicle originally had an MSRP of just $29,000 that’s some serious price inflation.

Of course, there’s a good reason this particular Typhoon fetched such a high amount on Bring A Trailer. Not only does it look as clean as a whistle, the thing only has 688 original miles on the odometer.

Someone had the foresight to realize not only was the GMC a special vehicle, it would be worth a bundle in the future. Plus, the owner had the discipline to not experience the thrill of the turbocharged 4.3-liter V6 with 280-horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque on tap working in concert with the four-speed automatic transmission, BorWarner transfer case, and a limited-slip rear diff for hair-raising acceleration.
Following in the footsteps of the much-praised GMC Syclone, the Typhoon was based on the S-15 Jimmy, not only getting an upgraded powertrain and drivetrain, but lowered for maximum acceleration and handling dynamics.

For its time the GMC Typhoon was lightning fast, blasting from 0-60 mph in just 5.3 seconds, something Car and Driver called “outrageous.” Keep in mind that was quicker than the Ferrari 348t and V8 Mustang at the time.
Being a fast SUV before that was really a thing means the Typhoon is fondly remembered by many, boosting its mystique and making it a classic many deep-pocketed collectors want to own. Combine that with an example that has barely any miles on it and that combination was enough to push bidding well into the six digits.
Is that ridiculous? Maybe, but it’s what the market will bear, for now. Check out the listing on Bring A Trailer for yourself here.
